The Ganaraska River in Port Hope is a popular spot for anglers, drawing visitors from across Ontario to fish for Atlantic and Pacific salmon, brown trout, and rainbow trout. Each fall, these species migrate upstream to spawn, making the river an important natural resource for the community.
To protect vulnerable fish during this peak migration, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has declared a fish sanctuary from Sept. 1 to Oct. 14. The restricted zone runs from the south side of the Jocelyn Street Bridge to the CNR rail bridge, north of Lake Ontario. During this period, fishing within sanctuary boundaries is strictly prohibited.
Following the sanctuary, the extended fall fishing season begins. From Oct. 15 through Dec. 31, anglers may fish for salmon and trout along the same stretch of the river, from the CNR Bridge upstream to the Jocelyn Street Bridge.
Authorities remind residents and visitors that respecting sanctuary rules helps conserve fish populations for future generations. Conservation officers will be monitoring activity along the Ganaraska to ensure compliance.
For more information on regulations and local fishing opportunities, anglers are encouraged to visit the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry website.
