Ontario is moving to ban research testing on dogs and cats.
Premier Doug Ford made the announcement this week, saying the practice has no place in the province and calling it “cruel and unacceptable.”
The decision follows revelations from whistleblowers who brought forward details and images showing puppies were used in cardiac experiments at London’s Lawson Research Institute. Ford praised those who came forward, calling them “champions” for exposing what was happening.
The London facility, operated under St. Joseph’s Health Care, has since halted its testing on dogs after discussions with the province, though it maintains that proper protocols were followed.
Animal Justice welcomed the government’s move but is pushing for further reforms to ensure shelter pets are not sold to laboratories.
