With a rash of serious and fatal collisions in our listening area in recent weeks, we’re reminded to be aware of the “big four” causes of fatal crashes in the region, whch top the list year-after-year.
The OPP’s Bill Dickson says number 1 is speed. Whether it be in town or out, 10 over the limit or much faster.
Speed is followed by distracted driving, which Dickson says is much broader than just cellphone use.
Common sense often doesn’t come into play in the collisions. Dickson offers proof by saying some people are not getting the message that driving while intoxicated or high, ends lives.
Rounding out the top four is simply not clicking your seat belt before heading out. Dickson says sometimes people think it’s not needed when their just going around the corner.
Dickson says being mindful of the top four everytime drivers start their vehicles can help save lives.
With three serious collisions last week alone, all involved are hoping for a safer week on area roads and highways.
