Northumberland-Clarke MP Philip Lawrence says he’s looking forward to Parliament resuming in Ottawa on September 15 and to seeing his party leader, Pierre Poilievre, return to the House of Commons after winning 80 percent of the vote in the Battle River-Crowfoot riding by-election last week.
When MPs return, Poilievre will face Prime Minister Mark Carney across the Commons floor for the first time since Carney became Liberal leader.
Lawrence says he has already begun work in his new role as shadow minister for Intergovernmental Affairs and One Canadian Economy, Inter-Provincial Trade. Much of that work has focused on Bill C-5, legislation introduced by the Liberals in June aimed at easing internal trade barriers and promoting a more seamless national economy.
Conservatives have pushed for changes, with Lawrence noting they’ve put forward more than 30 substantive amendments to the legislation.
He says the party still believes there is a long way to go to fully eliminate barriers that limit the free flow of goods, services, and workers between provinces.
While Poilievre will take his seat in Ottawa in September, some have questioned whether he should continue as Conservative leader. Lawrence says the PC party will come together in Calgary next year to decide.
He adds that he, along with most Conservatives, believes Poilievre is the right person to lead the party into the next election and will be Canada’s next prime minister.
