The Ontario government says it’s investing more than $5 million through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) Training Stream to help over 2,900 youth, apprentices, and jobseekers in Northumberland and Peterborough prepare for careers in skilled trades, construction, manufacturing, aviation, and other high-demand sectors.
According to the government, the funding supports local organizations, including Junior Achievement Northern and Eastern Ontario, which received $609,398 to deliver hands-on training, mentorship, and paid placements for students exploring careers in high-demand industries. The Northumberland Builders and Construction Association received $230,240 to provide onsite construction training using a mobile training trailer, while Nventure Business Development will develop Canada’s first VR recruitment and retention tool for the manufacturing sector. OPCMIA Local 598 received $3.95 million to train apprentices and pre-apprentices in brick, stone, and restoration trades as part of downtown Port Hope projects.
Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development David Piccini said the programs equip workers with the skills needed for rewarding jobs and strengthen Ontario’s economy amid global trade challenges, including U.S. tariffs. Local leaders highlighted the impact on small communities, noting the investments create flexible, hands-on opportunities for youth and apprentices while addressing workforce gaps.
Since its launch in 2021, the SDF Training Stream has supported more than one million workers in Ontario. The provincial government has committed $2.5 billion over the next three years to train workers, strengthen industrial sectors, and create long-term economic opportunities across the province. Interested participants are encouraged to contact the lead organizations directly to access these programs.
