The All Hands on Deck food drive set a new record yesterday, with Northumberland residents turning out in force to support local families in need.
Held at grocery stores in Cobourg and Port Hope, the annual August event collected more than 9,300 pounds of food – the largest single-day total in its history. Organizers also reported $9,500 in cash donations, as well as 25 backpacks and other school supplies for students heading back to class next month.
The food drive is a partnership between Classic Rock 107.9, MyFM, and supported by Elliott Insurance with proceeds going to food banks across Northumberland County. This year’s campaign aimed to give families an extra boost heading into the fall, when household expenses often rise with the return to school and colder weather.
We caught up with Northumberland Fare Share Food Bank Executive Director, Meghan Flindall who with her team is working to sort all the donations.
Flindall also shared the following.
“Summer is traditionally the slowest month for donations at our food banks and having an annual event like All Hands On Deck that generates so much community support and goodwill is crucial for us as we head into back to school. We cannot thank you and the team at myFM and Classic Rock enough!”
Organizers say they are overwhelmed by the generosity shown and grateful for the many community members, businesses, and service groups who pitched in to make the day a success.
The All Hands on Deck food drive has become a summer tradition in Northumberland County, helping ensure food banks are well-stocked and ready to serve families year-round.
