Northumberland County has announced the winners of the 15th annual Mayors’ Keep the County Clean Challenge, a county-wide initiative aimed at reducing litter and promoting environmental stewardship.
From April 21 to 26, 2025, 2,472 registered volunteers from across Northumberland worked together to clear litter and illegal dumping from public areas, including roadsides, parks, trails, and other shared spaces.
County Warden Brian Ostrander says the challenge highlights the commitment residents have to preserving the natural beauty of their communities, adding that it’s inspiring to see people of all ages take action, make a difference, and lead by example.
The Town of Cobourg earned first place in the “Highest Proportional Representation of Volunteers” category, with 5 per cent of its population participating. The Township of Alnwick Haldimand followed closely with 4.4 per cent participation.
The Township of Cramahe took home the “Hardest Working Volunteers” title by collecting an average of 15.8 kilograms of litter per person. The Township of Hamilton was the runner-up in that category, with volunteers averaging 10.4 kilograms each.
Organizers say the combined efforts of this year’s participants are helping build a cleaner, greener, and more connected community.
