The Innovation Cluster — Peterborough and the Kawarthas is receiving $186,240 from the Ontario government to help skilled tradespeople gain the tools to launch and run their own businesses.
The investment is part of more than $2.8 million announced Thursday by Premier Doug Ford through the Skills Development Fund Training Stream for Durham Region and surrounding areas. The SDF aims to help workers in construction, manufacturing and other skilled trades sectors prepare for good-paying jobs in industries impacted by U.S. tariffs and economic uncertainty.
“In the face of President Trump’s tariffs and the economic uncertainty they are causing, our government will always have the backs of Ontario workers,” Ford said. “By investing in training programs in Durham Region, we’re protecting Ontario workers by helping them get the skills they need to land better jobs and bigger paycheques.”
The Innovation Cluster’s program will focus on equipping tradespeople not only with hands-on expertise but also with the entrepreneurial, financial and management skills required to run a sustainable business. Participants will learn about business planning, marketing, client relations, and navigating regulatory requirements.
“Our government is taking bold action to build the future of Ontario’s workforce,” said Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini, who is also Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “These investments will help thousands of people in Durham Region and across Ontario gain the skills and experience they need to succeed, while supporting local employers and strengthening our economy.”
The Skills Development Fund was launched in 2021 and has since invested $1.5 billion to train over one million workers for in-demand jobs. In its 2025 budget, Ontario committed an additional $1 billion over three years, bringing the total SDF investment to $2.5 billion.
Applications for the Innovation Cluster’s business training program will be available through its website, with spaces limited.
