The Peterborough Police Service has been named a finalist for a national human resources award.
The service is one of 11 nominees for the Most Effective Recruitment Strategy at the 2025 Canadian HR Awards and is the only police force in the running. The nomination recognizes the service’s innovative approach to recruitment over the past 18 months.
Key elements of the strategy have included:
-
Partnering with Fleming College, with the service’s Recruitment and Talent Acquisition Coordinator sharing real-world experience in the classroom.
-
Community engagement and inclusivity, with officers — including many recent recruits — presenting to international students during orientation sessions.
-
The creation of the Shuttle Run Training Group, launched in 2023 with Fleming College and its Police Foundations program, offering potential recruits a chance to practice policing’s physical requirements in a supportive environment.
The Shuttle Run Training Group runs Wednesdays from September to June at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre. In 2024, a women’s-only version was introduced to encourage more women to pursue policing careers.
The recruitment strategy has helped the service reach full authorized staffing levels for the first time in more than a decade in the summer of 2024, despite challenges in police recruiting across the country. It has also led to the development of a new hire orientation and onboarding program, and national recognition in Canada Blue Line Magazine.
The Canadian HR Awards will be handed out on September 18 in Toronto.
