Firefighters are working around the clock to contain two active wildfires in Kawartha Lakes, as extremely dry conditions and recent hot weather continue to challenge emergency crews.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says the Burnt River blaze, listed as Haliburton 19, remains at 27 hectares of forest. Crews have been working on the fire since early August, supported by aerial water bombers and ground teams.
A second fire, identified as OFR001, began on August 11th in the Kirkfield area. It has spread to 33.5 hectares and is burning east of Prospect Road and north of Eldon Station Road. Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service has requested MNRF assistance, with the Haliburton Fire Management Headquarters deploying three Fire Ranger crews and air attack operations to the site. Five local fire stations are also on scene.
Officials are asking the public and media to avoid both fire zones so emergency vehicles and personnel can safely operate. Road closures remain in effect on County Road 49 between County Road 121 and Bury’s Green, and on Prospect Road from south of 1304 to north of 1375.
While no evacuations are required, residents and visitors are being urged to steer clear of the affected areas. A total fire ban is in place across Kawartha Lakes, and officials say any reports of open burning will be met with zero tolerance.
Authorities are reminding the public to report any signs of smoke to Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue at 705-324-2191, and to keep drones well away from active fire zones, as their presence is illegal and poses serious risks to both aerial and ground crews.
