Northumberland OPP says a driver has been charged following a serious crash on Hwy. 401 earlier this year.
Back on April 20, 2025, just before 7 p.m., emergency crews responded to a crash involving two vehicles on Hwy. 401 near Newtonville Road in the Municipality of Port Hope. One driver ended up being airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, reported OPP.
The crash shut down the eastbound lanes between Newtonville Road and Service Centre Road for several hours as OPP’s technical collision investigators assisted at the scene.
On Aug. 11, 2025, police said on Aug. 5, 2025, one of the drivers involved in the collision was arrested.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 44-year-old Bowmanville resident was charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus,) dangerous operation, and driver – failing to properly wear a seat belt.
None of these charges have been proven in court. The accused will appear in Cobourg court in September.
Police continue to ask citizens to report suspected impaired driving by calling 911 and urge motorists to plan ahead before getting behind the wheel.
