Environment Canada has issued a multi-day heat warning for Peterborough, with temperatures expected to reach 32 to 35 degrees Celsius and humidex values up to 42 until Tuesday night.
To help residents stay cool and hydrated, the City offers an interactive Cooling Spaces map that identifies nearby cooling centres, splash pads, water refill stations, and green spaces.
City facilities open for relief include:
-
Peterborough Public Library (345 Aylmer St. N.) open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
-
Miskin Law Community Complex (271 Lansdowne St. W.) open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
-
Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre (775 Brealey Dr.) open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The Trinity Community Centre (360 Reid St.) offers drop-in programs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and overnight support from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Outdoor water bottle refill stations are available at multiple locations including Quaker Foods City Square and Beavermead Park, while splash pads across the city operate daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Riverview Park and Zoo’s splash pad opens 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
Residents are reminded open-air burning is prohibited in the city, with only approved propane or natural gas appliances allowed.
Due to ongoing dry conditions, a Level 1 drought is in effect. Otonabee Conservation asks residents to reduce water use by 10 per cent, focusing on limiting non-essential outdoor activities like lawn watering and car washing.
