An 18-year-old man from the City of Kawartha Lakes is facing a charge of uttering threats following a hate-related incident in the parking lot of Lansdowne Place Mall last month.
Peterborough Police say the incident happened July 29th and was reported to officers on August 8th. The investigation included reviewing videos, some of which were circulating on social media, that contained hate-based language.
After consulting with the Crown Attorney’s office, police charged the man with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. He has been released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court September 16th.
While there is no specific hate crime charge in Canadian law that applies to the incident, police say the hate element will be addressed in court proceedings.
“Anybody who has seen the video in this case will understand that that type of behaviour is not acceptable in our community, nor any community,” Police Chief Stuart Betts said in a statement. “We encourage residents to continue to report hate bias incidents or crimes. Reporting these incidents to police is crucial to ensuring we have the information needed to investigate and pursue charges when appropriate. We are committed to keeping our community safe for everyone who lives, works, or visits here.”
