A Carrying Place man is facing a slew of charges after numerous alleged thefts, break-ins and mischief incidents that started in 2021 and resulted in damages and losses estimated at nearly $300,000, say police.
On Thursday, Aug 7, 2025, OPP issued a release saying an arrest had been made in connection with the alleged incidents in the Carrying Place area spanning over four years.
“The thefts, break-ins and mischief incidents began at a subdivision in 2021 and continued until recently,” said OPP. “Damage and losses are estimated to be worth nearly $300,000.”
In the release, it states Quinte West OPP launched the initial investigation, with the East Region community street crime unit joining the probe in July of this year.
On Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025, OPP said the street crime unit and officers executed search warrants at a residence on Parkview Road in Carrying Place and on a vehicle, resulting in one person arrested without incident.
Officers allegedly recovered a large quantity of stolen items, including power tools and electronics worth more than $17,000, reported OPP.
As a result of the investigation, police said Mathew Gardiner, 31, of Carrying Place, was charged with four counts of break and enter to commit an indictable offence, four counts of wearing a disguise to commit an offence, six counts of theft over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, mischief over $5,000, five counts of mischief under $5,000, and eight counts of failing to comply with a probation order.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused was held in custody with a bail hearing scheduled before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on Thursday, August 7, 2025, reported OPP.
No other details were provided by police.
