Farmers across eastern Ontario are struggling with hot weather and dry conditions.
A report by the CBC says our region has seen several heat waves and only about half the normal rainfall in July. Environment Canada says this is based on 20 years of historical data.
Some farmers are doing their best to irrigate crops, but many have had to let less important plants die. One said she planted extra crops, expecting some loss, but it’s still frustrating.
In Winchester, a tomato grower says the harvest is a month behind. So far, only six pints of cherry tomatoes have been picked from over 300 plants.
Agriculture Canada lists the region as “abnormally dry.” The forecast shows no major rain ahead, with highs expected in the 30s and only scattered showers this week.
