A floating lantern ceremony will mark 80 years since the 1945 dropping of atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Hosted by the Peterborough Quakers, the poignant ceremony will be held at 7:35 p.m. Thursday (August 7) at the Little Lake T wharf. Its dual purpose is to remember the thousands killed and promote world peace.
The ceremony will see paper lanterns floated on Little Lake, with time set aside for reflections. Paper lanterns will be provided to all who attend.
On August 6th, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, instantly killing some 70,000. Three days later, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, causing another 40,000 deaths. Japan surrendered August 15th, bringing an end to World War Two.
