Growing Up on the Farm, a look into local agriculture, presented by KUBOTA. We are profiling Topsy Farms.
For Jacob Murray, life on the land is about more than chores and crops — it’s about family, responsibility, and tradition.
Founded in 1972 by a group of “draft dodging, peace-loving hippies,” the farm still runs with the same respect for nature and animals. Today, Jacob works alongside his two sons, who make up the third generation. Michael, 17, helps with haying and tractor work, while 20-year-old Nathan balances his full-time job with mechanical work on the farm.
Jacob says it’s a life that teaches kids to take responsibility — something he hopes to pass down.
The family recently completed a succession plan with Jacob, his brother, and sister stepping into leadership roles. For the next generation, he hopes any future involvement comes from passion, not pressure.
“It’s a difficult life,” Jacob says, “but its a good life.”
