The Northumberland Humane Society (NHS) has temporarily suspended all cat adoptions and intakes due to a ringworm outbreak affecting the region’s feline population.
The closure, expected to last six to eight weeks, will allow the shelter team to care for the cats already in their facility and perform deep cleaning of all cat housing areas.
Dog adoptions and intakes will continue as usual during this time. NHS staff remain available to assist the public by phone at 905-885-4131 or by email at info@northumberlandhs.com.
Ringworm is a fungal skin infection that spreads easily among animals and can be transmitted to humans. While not life-threatening, it can be persistent and requires long-term treatment and strict isolation. Common symptoms in pets include hair loss in circular patches, crusty or red skin, excessive scratching, and dull or broken fur.
Pet owners are encouraged to monitor for symptoms and consult their veterinarian promptly if any appear. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing the spread of the infection.
NHS will provide updates as the situation progresses. In the meantime, they thank the public for its understanding and support during this temporary closure.
Although the shelter’s doors are currently closed for cat-related services, NHS continues its mission, ensuring that dogs in need still find loving homes.
