With three major employers having recently announced restructuring plans that will see significant local job losses, Peterborough’s economic development director says the city is grappling with challenges reflected in communities across Canada.
Darryl Julott admits that Siemens’ plan to relocate its Peterborough facility to Concord, Lufthansa’s pending closure of its Peterborough call centre and Coca Cola Canada’s decision to cease local production of Minute Maid products are unfortunate byproducts of today’s economic climate.
With Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith having called a meeting Thursday with local industry stakeholders and economic development professionals to address recent economic shifts and their effects locally, Julott says there is reason to be encouraged.
To MPP Smith’s continued calls for the creation of employment lands to entice new companies here, Julott says work continues in that area.
