Construction of a new fourth operating room at Northumberland Hills Hospital is now underway, thanks to the success of the NHH Foundation’s Exceptional Community, Exceptional Care campaign and a major donation from The Radlett Foundation.
The late Bill Humphries and the Trustees of The Radlett Foundation contributed $3.4 million toward the project, which will enhance the hospital’s surgical capacity and support the delivery of more advanced procedures.
Work began in early July with the installation of a new rooftop air handling unit. The unit is designed to support a negative pressure environment, which is critical for infection control and will allow for procedures such as bronchoscopies.
“This incredible display of philanthropy is helping us bring visionary projects and new services to our community,” said Rhonda Cunningham, NHH Foundation CEO.
Hospital President and CEO Susan Walsh said NHH is growing and preparing for future needs. She added the support of donors like Humphries is crucial for capital investment.
Renovations over the coming months will include upgrades to change rooms, the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and the new OR space itself. The hospital expects the new surgical suite to be operational by the summer of 2026.
Dr. Andrew Stratford, Chief of Surgical Services, said the addition of a fourth operating room will boost recruitment and increase capacity for local and regional patients.
The campaign also supports other projects such as new MRI and CT scanners, a SPECT CT, and updates to the pharmacy, laboratory, and medical device reprocessing departments.
