Auto theft is no longer just a big city problem. OPP is investigating several recent vehicle thefts where suspects used Apple AirTags or similar tracking devices. Police believe the thieves spot vehicles during trips to larger cities, then use the devices to track them home and steal them—often late at night.
OPP is warning residents to stay alert and take steps to protect their vehicles. Drivers should always lock their vehicles and remove keys or fobs, park in well-lit areas or garages, and do a quick check for suspicious devices.
Check common hiding spots such as behind license plates, fuel doors, bumpers and wheel wells. iPhone users will get alerts if an unknown AirTag is nearby. Android users can download the “Tracker Detect” app from the Google Play Store.
