A 35-year-old Peterborough man wanted on a warrant is facing additional charges following an incident in the city’s downtown on Thursday morning.
Around 9:30am on Thursday, a K9 officer spotted the man riding a bicycle in the area of Aylmer and Murray streets. When the officer attempted to stop him, the man fled on foot, discarding an item as he ran. Constable Wentworth and Police Service Dog Gryphon pursued the suspect and apprehended him in a nearby alley.
Officers recovered the discarded item, which was determined to be a replica handgun. A further search of the man revealed three knives in his possession.
He was arrested on an outstanding warrant related to mischief under $5,000 and failing to comply with a probation order. He now faces three new charges:
-
Unauthorized possession of a weapon
-
Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order
-
Fail to comply with probation order
Police say the man is currently bound by a court order prohibiting him from possessing any weapons or firearms, and a probation condition requiring him to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
