A trip four years in the making will see the Peterborough Singers head to England this Saturday, their destination being historic Durham Cathedral in Durham for a week-long choir-in-residence experience.
Making the trip are 72 people, among them 60 singers who will perform in the Church of England cathedral which was mostly completed between 1093 and 1133 on an island near the North Sea seashore. Due to its distinct Romanesque architecture, the cathedral has served as the backdrop for several feature films, the first two Harry Potter movies among them.
Making the trip is Peg McCracken, an original singer with the choral group and its longtime business manager. She says a 2017 trip to York, England with the Peterborough Singers is fueling her anticipation of this experience.
McCracken says being invited to perform at the cathedral is nothing short of an honour that is granted few choral groups, noting that for members of the Peterborough Singers, an already strong bond will be strengthened.
The trip, notes McCracken, is a fitting tribute to Syd Birrell, the singers’ founder and director who has announced his pending retirement.
Originally formed as the Peterborough Symphony Singers, the Peterborough Singers became a stand-alone entity in 1999, and today has some 110 members performing a full concert program annually.
