Not guilty.
In a London courtroom on Thursday, all five former players with Canada’s 2018 world junior hockey team were found not guilty of sexual assault at the conclusion of a high-profile trial.
Dillon Dubé, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Michael McLeod and Cal Foote were all in court and were at the centre of the trial, which was based on an encounter that took place with a woman in the early hours of June 19th, 2018. The encounter happened as many team members were in town for events celebrating their gold-medal performance.
Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia says she didn’t find the complainant’s evidence to be “credible or reliable”.
Long-time women’s rights advocate Megan Walker, from London, gave us her reaction.
Despite the outcome, Walker says ‘hockey culture’ needs to change.
Locally, PTBOTODAY.ca also spoke with the Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre. Prevention Education and Community Engagement Coordinator, Jocelyn Enright, says it is really difficult for victims to come forward in these situations.
Enright has a simple message for anyone going through a terrible circumstance that might be disheartened by the verdicts in this trial.
Experts say the Crown has 30 days to file a notice of appeal.
