Speed enforcement efforts along County Road 25 in Trent Hills have led to a slew of charges for a 37-year-old and the alleged seizure of 30 rounds of rifle ammunition, says Northumberland OPP.
According to OPP, earlier this week, on July 22, 2025, at about 1 p.m., police were conducting speed enforcement and initiated a traffic stop after clocking a vehicle at 106 km/h in an 80 zone.
Police said the driver then allegedly provided false identity details before being taken into custody.
A vehicle search subsequently turned up about 30 rounds of rifle ammunition, reported OPP, on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
As a result of the investigation, the 37-year-old with no fixed address was charged with operation while prohibited, public mischief, personation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution or obstruct justice (identity fraud), transport firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner, possession of a prohibited device or ammunition, four counts of suspended driving, failure to apply for permit on becoming owner, operate motor vehicle without insurance, use of plates not authorized, and speeding.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The vehicle was impounded for 45 days, and the accused will appear in Cobourg court in August, said police.
The alleged incident has prompted a stern warning from OPP that providing false information during a traffic stop is a criminal offence and can lead to serious consequences – and that transporting ammunition carelessly poses public safety risks and can lead to charges.
