Officials with Trent University are responding to recent data from the Ontario University Application Centre, showing a decline in applications.
According to the OUAC, Trent received 12,408 applications from Ontario secondary school students, down four per cent from last year.
In a statement to PTBOTODAY.ca, Trent officials said that particular snapshot doesn’t paint the entire picture.
“The Ontario University Application Centre data for Ontario secondary school students (Group A) shows a 4% decline in applications to Trent though, notably, this dip follows 67% growth in secondary school applications to Trent over the past ten years. The 20% figure for “all other applicants” is based on OUAC Group B data (all applicants who are not currently studying in an Ontario high school), which does not reflect a significant portion of Trent’s applicants — including those who apply through the University’s free direct application. As a result, the OUAC data does not reflect the full scope of Trent’s application activity.
A more up-to-date measure of the University’s enrolment trends is confirmation data, that is, those students who have accepted an offer from Trent. Trent is currently seeing an increase in accepts (currently a 3.5% increase) from Ontario secondary school students. When all domestic confirmations are considered, Trent is seeing further growth, but it is important to note that these figures continue to be fluid throughout the summer months and into the fall. Final fall enrolment numbers are confirmed in the official November count which will reflect the University’s full enrolment picture, including the impact of changing policies and procedures related to international study permits.”
