Rebound Child and Youth Services in Cobourg is now accepting referrals for its Nightstop program, a community-based initiative that connects youth ages 16 to 24 who are experiencing homelessness with temporary, same-day housing placements in local host homes.
Nightstop is designed to respond to an urgent need. Northumberland County currently has no youth-specific homeless shelter, and Rebound’s program offers a safe and supportive alternative. Volunteer hosts, who are carefully screened, trained, and supported, offer their spare bedrooms to youth who need a place to stay.
“We are excited to start accepting referrals,” said Rebound Executive Director Sam Rockbrune, who praised the strong community involvement that has made the program possible. “From volunteer hosts to referral agencies and partners, Nightstop is about people showing up for youth when they need it most.”
Referrals can be submitted by the youth themselves, a trusted adult, or agencies such as schools, hospitals, police services, or youth-serving organisations. Rebound’s team accepts referrals Monday to Thursday before 3 p.m. and Fridays before 11 a.m. for same-day placement consideration. The referral process includes a risk assessment and reference check, typically completed within three to four hours.
“By acting quickly while prioritising safety, we help prevent youth from facing another night of uncertainty,” said Clinical Manager Makeda Irving.
Nightstop is funded by an Ontario Trillium Fund Seed grant and supported by 360 Kids.
