Northumberland County is calling on local property owners to help support residents experiencing homelessness during the colder months. The County is looking to rent a facility for use as a temporary overnight winter warming room between October 1, 2025, and April 30, 2026.
The warming room would provide overnight respite from the cold, with basic amenities like seating, washrooms, and light refreshments. The County is searching for a facility located outside the Town of Cobourg that meets the following requirements:
– Overnight access for about 12 hours a night, seven days a week
– Capacity for 30 people (including staff)
– Washroom access, heat, and on-site parking
– Preferably, internet access to support service delivery
“As staff continue to search for a suitable location, we’re extending this call to the broader community,” said Glenn Dees, Director of Health & Human Services. “We want to leave no stone unturned in finding a safe space for people on cold nights this winter.”
All proposed locations will be reviewed by County staff to ensure they meet operational and safety standards. A final selection will be made following County Council approval.
Property owners interested in offering a facility or seeking more information are asked to email the Community & Social Services Department at WarmingRoomSpace@Northumberland.ca or call Homelessness Services Manager Bill Smith at 905-372-3329 ext. 2314 by August 22, 2025.
