With assault, impaired and mischief charges laid – along with a slew of tickets dished out for speeding – it was another busy weekend for Northumberland OPP.
Here’s your latest rundown:
On July 12, 2025, at about 7:10 p.m., police said they responded to a traffic complaint about a vehicle travelling on County Road 30 in the Municipality of Brighton. The complainant told police the driver had pulled into a nearby gas station.
After locating and speaking with the driver, police said an impaired operation investigation was initiated and the driver taken into custody. A search of the vehicle allegedly yielded open liquor and unmarked cigarettes.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 30-year-old Brighton resident was charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), driving a motor vehicle with open container of liquor, and possession of unmarked cigarettes.
The accused also had their licence suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle impounded for seven days, reported OPP.
Police continue to ask citizens to report suspected impaired driving by calling 911.
Another incident dates back to an initial call in June with an arrest made on July 11.
On June 15, officers reportedly received multiple calls about a person yelling and causing a disturbance on Durham Street South in Colborne. After speaking with the complainants, police were further told that the individual was playing overly loud music.
Police said the subject of the complaint was a neighbour and they didn’t make themselves available to police. On July 11, officers spoke to the individual, and they were subsequently taken into custody, said police.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 54-year-old Township of Cramahe man was charged with mischief – obstructs, interrupts or interferes with the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property, and causing a disturbance.
In another incident on July 13, shortly before 1 a.m., OPP were on patrol in the County Road 45 area in the Township of Hamilton when an automated licence plate recognition (ALPR) notification reportedly came through about a suspended driver.
A subsequent traffic stop and investigation revealed the driver was suspended and allegedly in breach of release conditions, according to police.
As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old Ajax resident was charged with failure to comply with an undertaking, and two counts of driving while under suspension.
In a separate incident on July 13, at around 7:30 p.m., police said they responded to a family dispute at a County Road 65 residence in the Municipality of Port Hope.
After arriving on scene and speaking with the caller, police said the subject of the complaint had left the location and there were no serious injuries involved. An investigation was launched and efforts to locate the accused, but the 64-year-old Port Hope man ended up turning himself in at a detachment later that evening.
As a result of the investigation, police said the accused was charged with assault with a weapon, and two counts of assault.
Meanwhile, from July 11 to 14, Northumberland OPP also served up 51 provincial offence notices, with speeding once again the top offence with 28 people charged. Stunt driving, failure to remain at the scene, and other charges were also laid.
Northumberland OPP also took on commercial motor vehicle (CMV) enforcement efforts as part of Operation Safe Driver Week, and a number of offences were reported.
On OPP-patrolled roads, about 20 per cent of fatal crashes last year involved a CMV. Police are continuing to call on all motorists to do their part to share the roads safely.
None of the charges in the above unrelated incidents have been proven in court.
