Cobourg’s Lawn Bowling Club is inviting the community to step back in time this weekend as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of its historic clubhouse. Built in 1925, the charming structure has been a centrepiece in Victoria Park for generations. The club itself was founded in 1907 and has played an important role in Cobourg’s recreational life ever since.
Club secretary Nan Hendren says the July 20 celebration will be a period affair, complete with members dressed in 1920s-style costumes and emceed by Rob Davidson.
“It’s not just about the building,” Hendren says. “It’s about celebrating 100 years of community, sport and tradition.”
Hendren tells us more about the milestone.
Visitors can enjoy jazz-age music throughout the day, including classic hits from 1925 like “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “If You Knew Susie,” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” The festivities will also feature the Concert Band of Cobourg, a vintage 1925 Pierce Arrow automobile, commemorative cookies, cake and ice cream – plus opportunities to try lawn bowling.
The club is proud of its inclusive community, welcoming bowlers of all ages – from 12-year-olds to seniors in their 80s. It’s also home to several provincial and national champions, including Dan and Sharyl Ann Milligan, and Martin Foxall.
Hendren says members range in age from young teens to active seniors.
According to Hendren, some of Canada’s best bowlers have come out of the local club.
The Milligans and Foxall family have deep ties to the club, with competitive success passed down through generations. Today, young athletes like Baylee van Steijn continue that tradition, earning international recognition for Cobourg.
The celebration will take place in Victoria Park on Saturday, July 20, and the public is encouraged to attend – and even dress for the occasion.
And if you’re interested in getting started with lawn bowling, Hendren provides this advice.
