A 40-year-old Toronto man is facing multiple charges after a moving scam was stopped by Peterborough County OPP in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township.
Police say they were contacted Sunday by someone who was relocating to Peterborough and had hired a moving company that initially quoted a suspiciously low price. While following the truck from Vaughan, the complainant was told the delivery wouldn’t continue unless more money was paid.
Instead of paying, the individual called police. Officers met the truck on the side of the road, prevented it from leaving, and arrested the driver. The truck was taken to the complainant’s new home so it could be unloaded before being impounded.
The man is facing several charges, including fraud under $5,000 and multiple commercial vehicle infractions and is scheduled to appear in Peterborough court on August 19.
The OPP is reminding the public to watch for red flags when hiring contractors, especially when prices seem unusually low. Suspected scams can be reported to local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
