Greater Napanee Council has turned down a request from the County of Lennox and Addington to donate land in the Suddard Subdivision for affordable housing. The County had also asked for development charge exemptions as part of its 2024 push to lower-tier municipalities.
Town staff estimated the cost of donating the land and waiving fees would top $800,000.
Instead, Council accepted recommendations to invite the County to consider using its own land within Napanee. Staff will also explore other Town-owned properties in the urban core that could be offered for sale, giving the County the right of first refusal.
Officials say the Town has a responsibility to sell land at fair market value and does not have a mandate to fund affordable housing directly.
