The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) has completed its June Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP), with officers focusing on unsafe vehicle modifications and commercial motor vehicle safety.
Throughout the month, police issued 10 charges related to illegal or unsafe modifications and pulled one vehicle off the road due to critical safety concerns. Numerous warnings were also handed out, as officers used the opportunity to educate drivers about safe and legal vehicle upgrades.
As part of the initiative, CPS also hosted two Commercial Vehicle Awareness Days in collaboration with several partners, including the Peterborough Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police, Port Hope Police, Belleville Police, and the Ministry of Transportation.
During the two-day operation:
- 27 commercial vehicle inspections were conducted
- 43 charges were laid
- 11 unsafe vehicles were removed from the road
“These campaigns help raise awareness while keeping our roads safe,” said CPS in a release. “Illegal modifications and unsafe vehicles can have serious consequences.”
Drivers are encouraged to review provincial guidelines for vehicle modifications and commercial vehicle operations.
