Cobourg police say a 57-year-old Port Hope man is facing charges after a string of alleged thefts at local businesses.
The first incident was on June 14, 2025, when police said a man attended an Elgin Street West business and allegedly “selected an electric scooter” and departed the store without making any attempt to pay.
Two further similar incidents followed on June 21 at a Division Street business, and at a business in the north-end of town on July 7, according to police, who didn’t detail specifics regarding items allegedly stolen in these instances. Again, in both these incidents, police said no attempts were made to pay for items taken.
Police said they were able to review CCTV footage and identify a suspect in all three thefts, and the accused was picked up on Thursday, July 10.
As a result of the investigation, police said the accused was charged with three counts of theft under $5,000, three counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and three counts of failing to comply with probation.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
