A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of a new affordable and inclusive housing project in Peterborough’s East City.
On Wednesday, June 9, Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region, together with Our Daughter’s Home, began construction on an accessible duplex on Sophia Street. This new building will provide permanent housing and 24/7 on-site support for seven women with developmental disabilities.
Communications and Marketing Manager for Habitat for Humanity PKR, Holly O’Connor, says the project was only made possible through their collaboration with Our Daughter’s Home.
The home is designed to offer long-term stability in a quiet residential neighbourhood. The initiative comes as Peterborough faces growing pressure on its housing market, with rising rents and low vacancy rates.
O’Connor highlights the added barriers women with developmental disabilities face in securing safe and stable housing.
Public officials in attendance included MP Emma Harrison, MPP Dave Smith, and city councillors Matt Crowley, Kevin Duguay and Joy Lachica, showing strong community support for the initiative.
Construction is expected to begin later this summer, with fundraising efforts ongoing.
