The Northumberland Hills Hospital Auxiliary is once again offering its annual Dixie Mikel Scholarship to support student volunteers pursuing post-secondary education in the health sciences.
Each year, the Auxiliary Board of Directors awards $1,250 scholarships to qualifying students who have volunteered a minimum of 80 hours at Northumberland Hills Hospital and are either enrolled in or accepted to a post-secondary program in fields such as medicine, nursing, medical research or biotechnology.
The scholarship application deadline for 2025 is Thursday, July 30.
The Dixie Mikel Scholarship honours the late Yvonne “Dixie” Mikel, wife of respected local physician Dr. Don Mikel. Dixie Mikel was a long-time volunteer and instrumental in founding the Student Auxiliary Volunteer Program at the former Cobourg hospital. Her legacy lives on today through the continuing support of young people interested in health-related careers.
The scholarships are typically presented in late fall or early winter.
Students interested in applying can access the application form directly online.
Further details on the scholarship and additional volunteer opportunities can be found on the hospital’s official website under the volunteers tab.
The NHH Auxiliary continues to support a wide range of hospital programs and services through the dedicated efforts of its volunteers and community members.
Students who meet the criteria are encouraged to apply and take advantage of this unique opportunity to advance their education while being recognized for their contributions to local health care.
