The Ontario government says it’s replacing the Park Road and Cubert Street overpasses in Oshawa as part of a broader plan to expand Highway 401 to ten lanes.
According to the province, this work marks a key milestone in a nearly $30 billion investment to build, expand and repair highways, roads and bridges across Ontario. The overpass replacements, announced last week, are expected to support hundreds of construction and supply chain jobs and help reduce traffic congestion for drivers and commercial vehicles.
The Ministry of Transportation says the contract also includes resurfacing of the eastbound lanes between Harmony Road and Courtice Road.
The province says Highway 401 is a critical trade corridor, with more than 10,000 trucks transporting $380 million in goods along it each day. According to the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis, gridlock costs Ontario’s economy up to $56 billion each year and could rise to $108 billion by 2044 if left unaddressed.
Ontario officials say expanding the highway and improving aging infrastructure in Durham Region will help protect the provincial economy, speed up commutes, and support growth in communities.
The contract for the project has been awarded to Dufferin Construction Company, a division of CRH Canada Group Inc. based in Oakville.
