You have likely heard the story of a woman who used a piece of technology to call for help after her son was pinned by a tree in Algonquin Park a couple weeks back when powerful storms rolled across Ontario.
Our tech expert, Jess Hirsch says she had a satellite device with her that she used to alert authorities. He says the devises should be in every camper’s pack.
Hirsch says the devices range in price with some basic models in the $100 to $200.
Devices like satellite phones allow for calls and text messages but are more expensive.
Hirsch says no matter which route you take, the devices are a lifeline. There are a range of manufacturers producing them too, so options are not limited.
Many campers enroll in some sort of outdoor survival training. More and more of those offering that sort of course recommend campers and hikers investing in one of the devices.
