Northumberland OPP is warning residents about what has been described as a concerning scam circulating involving the sale of smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms that may not meet Canadian safety standards.
“Fraudsters are distributing unmarked fire safety pamphlets and fake safety checklists in an attempt to pressure residents into purchasing substandard alarms,” said police. “These scams are often accompanied by high-pressure sales tactics and requests for cash-only payments.”
In terms of how to spot the scam, police said residents should take note if there’s no identifiable business name or contact information; there are requests for cash-only transactions; the use of aggressive or pushy sales tactics and distribution of fake safety checklists or unofficial pamphlets.
“If something feels suspicious, trust your instincts and carry out some research into the service or product. Do not provide payment or personal information to unknown individuals or businesses,” added OPP, who continue to urge residents to report suspicious activity to local police.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre should also be contacted and is accessible online and by phone at 1-888-495-8501.
Northumberland OPP encourages residents to verify the legitimacy of all fire safety products and services before making any purchases. When in doubt, people can also contact local fire departments or a certified retailer.
The Office of the Fire Marshal also has information around safety requirements and approved alarms online.
