The Municipality of Port Hope, in collaboration with community partners, has launched the “BE WALTON” shop local campaign to aid downtown businesses during the Walton Street reconstruction.
This campaign, running through September 2024, is part of a broader initiative to support local businesses and maintain the town’s vibrancy during the construction period.
“The Be Walton campaign is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and support our local businesses during this transformative time,” states Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “By participating in the events and activities, and prioritizing our local merchants and services, we can all play a part in preserving the unique charm and vitality of our downtown area. Let’s show our love for Port Hope by shopping local, enjoying our vibrant arts scene, and making lasting memories in the heart of our community.”
The “BE WALTON” campaign encourages residents to immerse themselves in the local culture by shopping, dining, and exploring downtown. Activities include arts hubs every Saturday in Lent Lane, dazzling light displays, and performances by local buskers. Additionally, the Capitol Theatre’s “Shop, Dine, and Show” package offers a curated downtown experience.
Community engagement is further boosted with scavenger hunts, window display contests, and bi-weekly Playbill flyers detailing ongoing arts and cultural events. Residents can relax in shaded “Linger Zones” and enjoy takeaway food from local cafes and restaurants.
“Now is the time for Port Hope to show their love and support for our local, independent business owners,” adds Candice White, Chief Administrative Officer for Port Hope. “Our downtown is the beating heart of one of Ontario’s best-preserved and most complete 19th century commercial streetscapes. Visit as often as you can to shop, eat, drink, explore, and enjoy all that these doers and dreamers of our community have to offer. Let’s BE WALTON!”
To promote the campaign, “Be Walton” mementos such as lawn signs, buttons, and totes will be available at the Walton Street Reconstruction office. Public calls to action and radio ads will also be broadcast to keep the community informed and involved.
