Grab your furry friend. The Ferris Provincial Dog Park is open for your furry friends.
In the June 30 opening, MPP David Piccini announced the fenced-in, off-leash dog park would be one of the first within provincial parks for campers and residents to utilize.
But the initiative didn’t begin with Ferris in mind, the project began as a simple way for Councilor Daniel Giddings and his partner Christa to connect with dog owners when they moved to Campbellford.
When the couple came to Campbellford in 2020, they realized they were missing an area where pet owners can mingle.
Locally, Christa recaps that they had scouted multiple locations in Campbellford that would be suitable for an off-leash space, but ultimately the situations didn’t add up. What eventually led them to seek Piccini was a hike and a friendly chat.
Piccini and his team said roughly $50,000 was invested into the project through the province. Piccini backed the idea by saying it benefit campers and visitors with animals tremendously.
But Daniel describes this type of park is for specific people. Now that this development gives residents one spot to play with their dogs, the duo set their goals on furthering the dog-friendly space for residents.
A special, limited-edition “Ontario Parks” pet bandana was also showcased at the event, with all purchases supporting Ontario Parks directly.
