More than 500 people came out to the Warkworth Arena yesterday (March 11) in support of the First Annual Travis Gillespie Tournament.
Travis’ brother Dan Gillespie worked with family friend Zack Zedo to create an event in tribute to his brother’s drive and determination in life.
The fallen York Regional Police Constable Gillespie was killed on his way to work last September. In life, Travis was an MMA enthusiast and the Warkworth “barn” was where Travis was lovingly known as “Goli” when he played alongside his brothers growing up.
Dan Gillespie told us the money raised will go to support two of his brother’s passions.
Over 20-thousand dollars was raised for Hearts for Martial Arts and the Warkworth Minor Hockey Association.
We caught up with Zack Zedo between games.
Zack told us the tournament drew a mix of teams.
The “Vent Oil Kings” took the A championship and Gillespie family entry, “Shiloh Sheepdogs” were B champs.
Dan is planning for an even bigger event last year based on the outstanding response.
