Premier Doug Ford didn’t hold back speaking about quarantine measures at Canada’s land border with the United States on today. The province has reported 3,887 new COVID-19 cases and 21 additional deaths. The HKPR have shown that here in Northumberland we had just 1 new Covid-19 case today while Kawartha Lakes 6 and Haliburton had 1 case. Premier Ford was initially scheduled to address the province at 11 a.m. however that was delayed until 12pm.
This afternoon Ford stated that “We can’t take anything for granted right now, we need to be more vigilant than ever,” and that
“Not enough is being done to keep these deadly variants out of Canada.” he said,
Ford explained a scenario in which people fly to Buffalo, N.Y., have taken a taxi or limousine over the border to avoid quarantining.
Ford didn’t stop there, he specified a focus on borders even as he was asked why his government’s sick-leave announcement didn’t include 10 days of paid sick days, as recommended. Premiere Ford has asked Ottawa to suspend the arrival of international students in an attempt to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Ontario has been the only province to ask for this provision and that he’s not considering barring international students from entering Canada at this point, but he’s willing to work “more narrowly” with Ontario. Ford has unabatingly blamed the COVID-19 pandemic’s third wave on what he calls”porous borders.”
