Hooray for Coaches Day is presented by Family Dental Centre. We are profiling Sharyl Ann Milligan.
72-year-old Milligan is a youth lawn bowling coach that helped take 18-year-old Baylee van Steijn to the World Championships.
Milligan was born in London, grew up in Scaraborough and after her parents retired, they moved to Cobourg in the 1970’s.
She says she has always worked with children, working at the School for the Deaf in Belleville for 40 years, so the transition to coaching made a lot of sense – espicially in lawn bowling as her younger brother and father were quite involved in the sport as well.
She says the relationship between van Steijn and herself began after introducing Lawn Bowling at Plainville Public School.
Van Steijn went onto the Youth National Team, Youth Development Team, National Team for Mature and Youth and has competed in Whales and at the North American Challenge in California. Milligan said she was particallary proud on her work in the North American Challenge, as she won the first of this event 25 years ago.
