Transition House brought residents together Wednesday evening at Trinity United Church in Cobourg for a public discussion about homelessness and potential solutions in the community.
Executive Director Christian Harvey spoke about the challenges facing people experiencing homelessness, encouraging residents to look beyond stereotypes and better understand the circumstances that can lead to housing insecurity.
Harvey pointed to factors including the rising cost of living, financial hardship and a shortage of affordable housing as contributing to the problem. He stressed that homelessness is a complex issue that cannot be addressed through enforcement alone.
Instead, he emphasized the importance of collaboration among community organizations, all levels of government and local residents to develop meaningful, long-term solutions.
The meeting provided an opportunity to bring the issue into the open and encourage greater understanding of the challenges facing vulnerable members of the community.
Harvey said he was very pleased with the turnout and hoped attendees would make an effort to better understand the complexity of the issue and work together to find solutions.
Transition House continues to advocate for a community-wide approach to addressing homelessness and improving access to stable housing.
