With only a few short hours until Cobourg residents go to the polls on Monday, deputy mayoral hopeful and Police Service Board Chair Adam Bureau has announced he is stepping down from the board.
In a press release issued Sunday, Bureau said he would continue serving as a board member until his term concludes on Nov. 14, 2026.
In an exclusive interview with Classic Rock 107.9 morning host York-Bell Smith immediately following the press release, Bureau said he was not pressured in any way to resign and that the decision was entirely his own.
In Sunday’s press release, Bureau said, in part:
“Serving as Chair of the Cobourg Police Service Board has been one of the greatest honours of my public service career. It has also been one of the most challenging and rewarding responsibilities I have ever undertaken. Throughout my time as Chair, I have had the privilege of working alongside extraordinary people who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our community. To the Cobourg Police Association and Senior Officers Association, every sworn officer, every civilian employee, and the leadership of the Cobourg Police Service — thank you.”
Vice-chair Sean Graham will assume the role of acting chair until the board’s elections take place, ensuring continuity in its leadership. Bureau has pledged to ensure Graham is as familiar as possible with the protocols and responsibilities of the position before he steps down.
Bureau said in the press release:
*”Sean has my respect, my gratitude and my full support, and I know he will bring his own leadership, dedication and commitment to the board. My decision to step down before Nov. 14 is about ensuring a smooth transition and giving the next chair the opportunity to prepare for the responsibilities ahead.”
