Northumberland County will open a Winter Warming Room in Cobourg on Nov. 2 to provide people experiencing homelessness with a safe, heated place to stay overnight during the colder months.
The seasonal service is moving from the county’s 555 Courthouse Road location to a boardroom at its 600 William Street facility. The space will operate nightly from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. until about April 15, 2027, although the closing date could change depending on weather conditions.
County officials say the warming room will provide additional capacity when local shelters are full. The emergency shelter at 310 Division Street has 46 beds and regularly sees high demand.
The overnight space will offer access to washrooms and light refreshments while providing protection from potentially dangerous winter conditions. County officials say the program complements year-round shelter and support services and is being delivered with the Town of Cobourg and community partners.
