Habitat for Humanity Northumberland is bringing back its Great Gingerbread Build Off this holiday season, expanding the event after organizers say last year’s competition was a success.
The activity has been part of Habitat’s fundraising efforts for about a decade, but was reinvented as a team competition last year.
Cathy Borowec, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Northumberland, says this year’s event will feature several ways for people to participate.
The main competition is open to teams of four, including corporate teams and groups of friends. Borowec says spectators will also be encouraged to come out and support their teams.
The Build Off Showdown will take place November 20th at 5:30 p.m. at the Lions Centre.
A new Gingerbread Academy is also being introduced this year for middle and high school teams. That competition will take place November 29th at Port Hope High School.
There will also be free kids workshops on November 14th at the Mill Restaurant and November 22nd at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Port Hope.
Borowec says the event is designed to connect the fun of building gingerbread houses with Habitat’s work providing homes in the community.
The fundraising connection is direct, with proceeds helping Habitat for Humanity Northumberland build homes locally.
The event also gives people a chance to enjoy some lighthearted competition, complete with Habitat-themed building inspectors.
Jacqueline Pennington Real Estate is returning as the title sponsor for a sixth year, continuing its support of Habitat for Humanity Northumberland and the Gingerbread Build Off.
