The United Way Northumberland kicked off its 2026-27 fundraising campaign this morning to a packed house at the Best Western Cobourg.
In attendance were dignitaries and business leaders from all over Northumberland County who gathered over breakfast to celebrate the accomplishments of last year’s campaign and gear up for this year’s drive.
Hosted by Northumberland United Way Executive Director Alicia Vandine, the morning began with the news that the goal of $750,000 set for last year’s campaign had, in fact, come in at a grand total of $851,487.
Vandine praised the volunteers and businesses in the room who had contributed to the effort and acknowledged that she was well aware that times are getting tougher for everyone, including the many invaluable supporters present that morning.
Vandine noted that among the many outstanding achievements of the last campaign was an increase in the number of people supported, which rose from 17,000 the previous year to 24,000 in 2025-26. Another big milestone for the organization was the Backpacks for Kids program, which exceeded 850 units distributed.
The “Haven for All” initiative also received high praise from Vandine as she described its impact on those who are much less fortunate and in dire need of hope.
One of the most moving speeches of the morning was delivered by April Day, Program and Communications Manager, who commented that once they began nearing their goal of $750,000, the community came forward with a huge push to put them over the top. She said she is hopeful that can happen again this year.
The morning capped off with the announcement of the 2026-27 monetary goal, which is set at $850,000. It was met with cheers as the banner was unfurled, revealing the number. All were invited to sign the banner as a symbol of their commitment to another successful year for United Way Northumberland.
