The Northumberland Land Trust has added a new role to its team as the organization continues to grow its efforts to protect natural areas across the county.
Ian Shanahan has been appointed as the organization’s new Engagement and Development Coordinator.
Shanahan grew up in Northumberland County and is now raising his family in the area. He brings a background in education, environmental interpretation, communications and nature-based tourism to the newly created position.
His experience includes 13 years in the education and interpretation department with Ontario Parks. During that time, he spent eight seasons at Presqu’ile Provincial Park, as well as time at Charleston Lake and Algonquin Provincial Park.
Shanahan also spent five years as General Editor of Green Teacher magazine and three years as Director of Communications with Worldwide Quest. He continues to work with the Outdoor Learning School and Store as a Project Coordinator.
Northumberland Land Trust Executive Director Amanda Newell says the new position was made possible with support from the Centre for Land Conservation and will help the organization build relationships with more individuals and foundations that can support its conservation work.
The Northumberland Land Trust is a charitable, not-for-profit organization focused on preserving the county’s natural heritage. Its work includes accepting land donations, entering into conservation agreements and raising funds to protect natural landscapes, forests, farms and waterways.
Shanahan says he is looking forward to contributing to the organization’s work during a period of continued growth.
